Republican Gov. Sam Brownback signed a school aid bill Wednesday that Kansas lawmakers hope will satisfy the state Supreme Court's ruling to fix equity issues in education financing.

KMUW assistant news director and host of Soulsations Carla Eckels received the Wayne Carlisle Distinguished Service Award Wednesday from Wichita State University.

The award is the highest honor available for an unclassified professional at the university. It recognizes the employee who best emulates the care and dedication of former Shocker Wayne Carlisle.

A massive wildfire has burned through more than 625 square miles in Oklahoma and Kansas, forcing Governor Sam Brownback to issue a state of disaster emergency.

Hundreds of firefighters were dispatched to areas of southern Kansas to try and contain a wildfire. Government officials say the worst of it is over, with fire crews from Wichita heading home just after 7 in the morning.

There are reports of structural damage here in Medicine Lodge, as well as in Reno County.



The Wichita State shockers fell to Miami in the second round of the NCAA Tournament losing 65-57. The game marks the end of an era for WSU senior guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet as well as forward Evan Wessel. The trio’s streak at WSU included Three Missouri Valley Conference titles and one MVC Tournament title.



Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker combined for 29 points and Wichita State’s swarming defense did the rest as the Shockers beat Arizona 65-55 on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Wichita State (26-8) will play Miami (26-7), the third seed in the South Region, on Saturday.


Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell gave his first State of the City address Thursday.

Unlike past addresses, this one was released in the form of an 11-minute video shot at various locations around Wichita, including Wichita State University’s under-construction Innovation Campus and downtown’s Pop-Up Park.

In the video, Longwell touts what he considers the city’s successes in 2015 and outlines goals for the coming year. Highlights from last year include:

-The opening of the new terminal and parking garage at the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport;

An October 2014 plane crash at the former FlightSafety International Building in southwest Wichita was the result of the pilot's "inability to safely control the airplane in an emergency situation," the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday.
