Orpheum Reopening Celebration

2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and early architect of punk rock, Billy Idol remains to this day a true rock legend.

For almost 50 years, Billy Idol has been one of the definitive faces and voices of rock’n’roll. Between 1977 and 1981, Idol released three albums with Generation X as their camera-ready frontman. In 1982, with guitarist Steve Stevens at his side, he embarked on a transatlantic/trans-genre solo career that integrated the bold and simple lines of punk and rock’n’roll decadence on songs like “Dancing With Myself,” “White Wedding,” Rebel Yell,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Cradle of Love” and more. Touring consistently around the world and showing no signs of slowing down, Idol released Dream Into It on Dark Horse Records in 2025, earning praise from fans and critics alike. Earlier in 2026, Idol released Billy Idol Should Be Dead, the definitive documentary about his life and career.

Derby Arts Council: Veteran Art Show at the Derby Public Library

The exhibit is set to run Aug. 31 through Oct. 22 and will collect works from veteran artists across all mediums (fiber arts, photography, painting, metalwork, etc.) to be shown in the Gathering Space Gallery and display case at the library entrance.

As part of the exhibit, there will be awards up for grabs, with Aug. 4 the deadline to submit entries. There will also be a public reception — and awards presentation — for the exhibit on Sept. 18.

Children ages 3-6 will develop literacy skills through active listening, singing, movement, and sharing a love of stories in a group setting. Please note this program will not take place on 11/11 at the Westlink location.

Children ages 2 and under will develop a love of learning as they sing, dance, and enjoy simple stories. Caregivers will learn tips to encourage their child's early learning development. Please note this program will not take place on 11/27 at the Advanced Learning Library.

It's never too early to start your child's love of learning! Music, rhymes, activities, and stories for caregivers and babies aged birth to 18 months. Please note this program will not take place on 11/26 at the Westlink location.

Art is not only for Art Museums. If a picture is worth a thousand words, it stands to reason that art can tell us a lot about the times and place where it was produced. Local history museums exist to explore time and place.

SEPTEMBER'S TOPIC: Before the Hillcrest in College Hill
Presented by Mike Maxton

Mike Maxton covers the early history of the College Hill area of Wichita, focusing on the land where the Hillcrest Apartments building currently stands, at Douglas and Rutan.

About the Presenter

Mike was born and raised in Wichita and grew up in the College Hill neighborhood, only a few blocks from the Hillcrest. He stumbled into a career with the United States Postal Service when he applied for a part-time job while attending Wichita State University. After 30 years of working and relocating for the Postal Service, he retired in Dallas as the Executive Manager of Plant Support for a five-state region. Mike and his wife, Wanda, moved back to Wichita to be closer to their family. As his parents approached the end of their lives, he found an interest in his family genealogy, which led to a long-lasting addiction to Wichita history.
