District 3 Candidates Want To Improve South Wichita's Image

Candidate Facebooks
James Clendenin, left, and William Stofer are running for the District 3 seat on the Wichita City Council.

James Clendenin is the only incumbent on Wichita's city council running in Tuesday's general election. He’s up for the 3rd District seat against first-time candidate William Stofer.

District 3 covers south and southeast Wichita, an area both candidates say doesn't have the best image throughout the rest of the city.

William Stofer, a writer, says it’s why he decided to run for office.

“I didn’t like how things were slowly moving or progressing in District 3," he said at a recent candidate event. "I saw a lot of blighted areas—Hilltop, Planeview, the Broadway corridor, which is where I live--and thing were just moving too slow.”

James Clendenin said he’s heard many people have never gone south of Kellogg, but he's working to change that.

“I believe that south and south-east Wichita is probably one of the biggest opportunity zones in the city of Wichita,” he said.

Clendenin was appointed to the council for a partial term in 2011, and was first elected in 2013.
