At Play: Angel Finds Southern Comfort

The Wichita State University School of Performing Arts presents Violet March 6-9. Violet is based on The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts and set in 1964 in the deep south. The story follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter young woman scarred by an accident as a young girl. One of the most acclaimed off-Broadway shows of the 1990’s, Violet is currently being staged on Broadway in a production starring Sutton Foster. This production is directed by guest director Stephen Kopel .

Cabaret Oldtown presents Sweet Southern Comfort & Rock 'n' Roll Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. now through March 29. The story of one woman's journey through the emotional music of the 1960's with songs associated with Janis Joplin, Roy Orbison, Etta James, Vanilla Fudge, Otis Redding, and more. The cast of this musical revue features Christi Moore as well as Wichita music scene veterans including Ron Smith and Steve Hatfield.

Wichita Community Theatre presents Duck Hunter Shoots Angel by Mitch Albom March 12-16. Duck Hunter Shoots Angel tells the story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but think they shot an angel. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer, who don’t believe any of it—until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp.

He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club.
