Restaurant Review: Doo-Dah Diner

Wichita has a relatively new fun breakfast and lunch spot, the Doo-Dah Diner, just east of the on-ramp to Kellogg, between Broadway and Market.

Doo-Dah serves comfort food, short-order style but with a twist and a decidedly new eye to old diner standards. I have been there several times, and have enjoyed everything I have tried.

On one visit, I had Timi’s Benny, an eggs Benedict variation, with perfectly poached eggs, smoky bacon, and avocado, blanketed with velvety hollandaise sauce. Eggs Benedict are one of the most difficult breakfast dishes to pull off, since hollandaise is very tricky and also hard to hold at correct temperatures. Doo-Dah’s is excellent-- lemony and rich with butter and eggs, and not made from a powder, unlike many you will encounter. The avocado took it to another level of creaminess.

I have shared bites of other dishes with friends, and one of their standouts is the Beefy Doo-Dad, a crispy softball of mashed potatoes, stuffed with seasoned ground beef and onions, fried and served in a puddle of mushroom gravy. It was drizzled with a spiky horseradish sauce that added sophistication to this unusual dish.

The corned beef hash is delicious, big chunks of meat, lots of peppers and onions and potatoes, served with fried eggs and a green chili sauce that made the flavors pop.

The cabbage roll, seasoned with allspice and cinnamon, is served with a marvelous tabbouleh that is more parsley than grain, and the grain is quinoa. Score!

Doo-Dah Diner is casual, with a large and varied menu that I’m excited to try more of. I have heard criticism that the service on weekends needs work, but I avoid breakfast restaurants on weekends for that reason. Timirie and Patrick Shibley, the owners, are aware of this and are working hard to improve things on those crucial days.

They are not open Mondays and can be packed on weekends, so keep that in mind.
