SPECIAL: First Day Of Winter 2018

KMUW Music marks the first day of winter on Friday, December 21. Tune in to Global Village, Strange Currency and Crossroads from 7:00 p.m. to midnight to celebrate the new season.

Global Village kicks off the celebration starting at 7:00 p.m. Artists featured include Leonard Cohen, Gil Scott-Heron, Boys of the Lough, Bebel Gilberto, ErsatzMusika, Loreena McKennitt, Esquivel and more.

The winter solstice celebration continues on Strange Currency with seasonal selections from 8 to 10 p.m.

In conjunction with the Crossroads December feature of music from New Orleans, the show presents an American Routes Special, Holiday Soul & Spirit. In hour one, it’s live music from the Crescent City’s Preservation Hall, with the ‘Soul Queen of New Orleans’ Irma Thomas, along with the Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet and the acclaimed gospel group, the Blind Boys of Alabama. In hour two, it’s blues, jazz, and roots seasonal favorites from Johnny Otis, Charles Brown, Bob Dorough, Leadbelly, Willie Mitchell and more.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club. As a music journalist, his work has appeared in Pop Matters, Vox, No Depression and Keyboard Magazine.
