Holiday Music Specials 2018

Join Global Village, Strange Currency and Night Train from 7 p.m. to midnight on Christmas Eve, December 24, and on Christmas night, December 25, for 5 hours of holiday music both nights.

Monday, December 24

Global Village features seasonal favorites done world music style and holiday songs from various corners of the globe. Highlights include the salsa Christmas classic Asalto Navideño, a favorite from Louis Armstrong, a tiny Nutcracker from the Modern Mandolin Quartet, a holiday favorite done punk-polka style by Brave Combo, and songs of the season from the Caribbean and New Orleans.

Strange Currency keeps the special feature going with music from Sufjan Stevens, Lyle Lovett, U2 and more.

Night Train closes out the evening with two Joy to the World holiday specials for this Christmas Eve. The shows feature Bob Thompson and his band in concert with a special guest vocalist. In hour one we’ll hear a Kansas City born, Columbus based singer who appeared with Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Mann, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Columbus Symphony and more. In hour two, Tom Lellis is the special guest.

Tuesday, December 25

The celebration continues for a second night, starting on Global Village. Highlights include some of Grant Green’s “Favorite Things,” a trenchant holiday original from Pumpkin Head Ted, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones with Tuvan throat singers with an inventive take on a holiday favorite, a gypsy jazz celebration from the Gypsy Hombres, some Caribbean seasonal favorites, a South African reinterpretation of a holiday classic, and music from A Nomad Christmas.

Strange Currency has even more holiday music, this time from Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon and Adrian Belew.

Night Train wraps up the holiday celebration with a live performance from Memphis Ukulele Band featuring songs from their new holiday album, Holidays Ain’t the Same, in hour one. Then in hour two it’s a Canadian Brass holiday special, as this eclectic and accomplished quintet present a jazzy set of seasonal favorites.
