Loss Of Federal Funds Will Reduce Programs For Wichitans
After a lengthy discussion Tuesday, Wichita City Council members decided what programs would receive funds from a federal grant.
Kansas Realtor Group To Rally At Statehouse
The Kansas Association of Realtors says dozens of members will flock to the Statehouse Wednesday.
They want lawmakers to keep two popular income tax breaks for homeowners. The group expects more than 250 members to participate in a rally and to lobby legislators afterward.
The association hopes to save two state income tax deductions targeted for elimination by Gov. Sam Brownback. One deduction is for the property taxes Kansans pay on their homes and the other is for the interest on their home mortgages.
Coffeyville Refinery To Pay $2 Million In Penalties
An oil refinery in southeast Kansas has agreed to pay federal penalties totaling more than two million dollars as the result of a 2007 oil spill.
Vote On New Kansas Science Standards Months Away
Kansas State Board of Education members say they're not likely to see a final draft of proposed science standards for public schools before April. Education official Matt Krehbiel says the board wouldn't take a final vote on the standards until at least May.
Krehbiel updated the BOE of how work on the standards was going Tuesday. Kansas and 25 other states are working on common standards for possible adoption in their public schools.
Krehbiel said the final draft of the multi-state group's guidelines should be ready at the end of March, possibly allowing the board to review them for the first time at its April meeting.
Past work on science standards in Kansas has been overshadowed by debates about how evolution should be taught to students.
