TOPEKA — Joe Biden has overwhelmingly won a Democratic presidential primary in Kansas that the state party conducted exclusively by mail because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden, a former vice president, was expected to prevail in Saturday's vote and capture a majority of the states delegates to the Democrats national nominating commission. Biden took 77% of the vote.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was still in the race when the Kansas party began mailing ballots at the end of March, but he suspended his campaign and endorsed Biden.

About 4,000 people attended a political rally Friday at Century II in Wichita in support of James Thompson, one of two Democrats running in Kansas' 4th Congressional District.

But perhaps the biggest draws at the "Unite for America" rally were Vermont senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who both endorsed Thompson in his second bid for Congress.

The Democratic National Convention will wrap up on Thursday night in Philadelphia with Hillary Clinton formally accepting the presidential nomination. As KMUW’s Sean Sandefur reports, delegates have found the speeches from First Lady Michelle Obama and others inspiring.

The Democratic National Convention has been historic. Hillary Clinton is the first woman to ever be nominated for president by a major party. She’ll formally accept that role on Thursday night.

The Kansas Democratic Party declared Bernie Sanders the winner of Saturday's Kansas Democratic caucuses. The Vermont senator took 23 delegates, and opponent Hillary Clinton took 10.

Just hours after the GOP caucus in downtown Wichita boasted personal appearances from party frontrunners on Saturday, including eventual winner Ted Cruz, area Democrats swamped their caucus sites to support their candidates.

Democratic Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders repeated his call for overhauling campaign finance during a campaign stop in Lawrence yesterday.

The presidential candidate singled out the Koch brothers specifically and said large campaign donors have too much power. He said his campaign has accepted small donations averaging $27.

“I am not indebted to Wall Street, the drug companies, the fossil fuels industry. I’m indebted to millions of people for their 27 bucks,” Sanders said.
