On Stage: At The Kechi Playhouse And At Roxy's

The Kechi Playhouse is putting Living on Love onstage Fridays through Sundays from September 6 to the 29th. This two-act farce from Joe DiPietro is actually a re-working of the play Peccadillo, by Garson Kanin.

In 2014, with opera star Renée Fleming in the leading role, Living on Love was the belle of the renowned Williamstown Theatre Festival ball in Massachusetts. It is the outrageous story of a tempestuous marriage between a diva and maestro and the ghostwriters each hires to tell her and his life stories. Life on an operatic scale makes this farce an evening of larger-than-life fun.

Also running Fridays through Sundays from Sept. 6 to the end of the month is tick, tick....BOOM! at Roxy's Downtown. This autobiographical musical is by Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent, which brought him a Pulitzer Prize and three Tony Awards. This show is set in 1990, and it confronts the anxiety that Jon the composer feels as he nears his 30th birthday and has little recognition to show for his decade of work in music. He fears that he chose wrongly when he made art his career, and he sees those around him giving in and moving on to more lucrative pursuits.

The title, tick, tick....BOOM!, describes Jon's “mounting anxiety,” as he informs us right away. The musical began life as a solo work, but after Larson's death in 1996, it underwent revisions by playwright David Auburn that turned the piece into a three-actor production. This show is rated PG.
