Next Best Thing: Pride Month And Juneteenth

mama.film
Mama.film offers two upcoming screenings of the 2020 Sundance Official Selection "Miss Juneteenth."

First up this time is Carnival of the Animals, presented by Ballet Wichita. The free, family-friendly production is described as a “colorful journey through the animal kingdom.” It’s Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Naftzger Park, so firm up your plans now.

For the remainder of June, two big celebrations are underway: Pride Month and Juneteenth.

The Tallgrass Film Association is presenting Pridegrass: A celebration of LGBTQ+ films, streaming June 10-30. The lineup includes two feature length films and two curated programs of short films. More info is at tallgrassfilm.org.

The inaugural Miss JuneteenthICT Scholarship Pageant takes place this Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. at Wichita State University. If you aren’t familiar with the history of the Juneteenth holiday, it commemorates the date — June 19, 1865 — that Union forces landed in Texas with news of the Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery in the U.S.

Ticket sales for the JuneteenthICT pageant support scholarships for the contestants. Find out more at coreofwichita.org. There you will also find many more JuneteenthICT events.

On that list are two screenings of the 2020 film Miss Juneteenth. Mama.film — Wichita’s community microcinema — has two showtimes at 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 13. Ticket sales again benefit the JuneteenthICT pageant, and can be purchased at mama.film.

There you’ll see another upcoming screening for Who Will Start Another Fire, “an anthology of 9 short films created by emerging filmmakers from underrepresented communities around the world.” There are four showtimes, June 11-17.
