Next Best Thing: New Looks For Local Favorites

Wichita Festivals worked with AIGA Wichita to select 12 artists for "Depth of Field: A Wichita Photo Album." Left to right: Catherine & William McCarthy by Jojo Stock, Olive Ann Beech & Walter Beech by Gina Stevenson, Dave Stallworth by Priscella Brown.

Last Friday was the First Friday of November, but if—like me—you were still recovering from election night, then you weren’t in any shape to leave the house for an art crawl.

Thankfully, that week is over, andthe exhibition Depth of Field: A Wichita Photo Album is still on display.

Wichita Festivals enlisted twelve local artists to create “artistically imagined” photos of Wichita icons. The images are installed in windows along St. Francis from Douglas to Second Street, through November 16. Learn more and read the biographies of those Wichita history-makers at wichitaphotoalbum.com.

Botanica’s Illuminations is still on this year, but with new safety precautions. Advance tickets, masks and social distancing are required for the traditional walk through the gardens. There’s also now a drive thru option, so you can enjoy the lights from the safety and warmth of your own car. Illuminations is open November 14 through January 8. Visit botanica.org to learn more.

And you can do a bit of good with your holiday gift-giving through the Wichita Alternative Gift Market. It’s been scaled down this year and moved outside, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at First Presbyterian Church.

There are four local projects you can support, or 30 global causes, like Food for Humanity in Yemen, mobile pharmacies in Haiti, and the Feed the Hungry, Shelter the Homeless program here in the U.S. Ornaments or greeting cards can be customized to reflect your donation, and make for thoughtful gifts. An online version of the market is at alternativegiftmarketwichita.wordpress.com.
