KMUW News Staff Wins Three Regional Murrow Awards

KMUW has won three regional 2018 Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for excellence in journalism.

Reporter Deborah Shaar won two Murrow awards: Feature Reporting for a story on how a Wichita library is working to grow early childhood literacy skills, and Hard News for a look at what could happen to Wichita’s thriving global export market under the trade policies of President Donald Trump.

Carla Eckels, KMUW’s director of cultural diversity, news and engagement, won forSports Reporting for her story on former Newman University basketball coach Mark Potter and his battle with depression.

KMUW competes in the Small Market Radio category for Region 5, which includes stations in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. The regional winners advance to compete in the national Murrow Award competition.

Tom joined KMUW in 2017 after spending 37 years with The Wichita Eagle where he held a variety of reporting and editing roles. He also is host of The Range, KMUW’s weekly show about where we live and the people who live here. Tom is an adjunct instructor in the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University.
