The Wichita Board of Education will vote at its meeting on Monday whether to accept applications for an open seat in District 3.
The seat was left open in June after former school board member Ngoc Vuong resigned to accept a tenure-track assistant professor out of state.
If the board votes to start taking applications, it will accept them through noon on Aug. 26.
To qualify, a person must be eligible to vote and live within the boundaries of District 3, which is in southeast Wichita.
Vuong was elected in 2023 at 23 years old, making him the youngest school board member in the district’s history. He is also the first Asian-American elected to the board.
Whoever the board appoints in District 3, Vuong said he hopes they will remember their role as a watchdog.
“My reminder to them is that, at the end of the day, it is the superintendent and district leadership that works for you — the board — not the other way around,” he said.
In September, the board will hold a special meeting to publicly interview qualified applicants.
If the board votes to appoint a new board member at the meeting, that person would start serving in October.
The new board member would serve the rest of Vuong’s term through December 2027.
