Indie Film Guide: Purple Rain, Legend, and Oklahoma!

Ok, well, you really have no excuse not to see Purple Rain at some point over the next two weeks, assuming you haven’t already been watching it on a loop since Prince died. Or, I guess, even if you have been.

Wichita Big Screen is back with their Return of the Cults series, and first up is the Prince masterpiece--yeah, I said it, masterpiece--Purple Rain. It plays multiple times tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday at the Palace Theatre, and then if somehow you still can’t catch it, the OrpheumTheatre is showing it again in a week on Saturday the 14th as a double feature with Prince’s directorial debut, Under the Cherry Moon.

Next week, Wichita Big Screen will show Ridley Scott’s 1985 fantasy movie Legend, which stars Tom Cruise and also Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness, and while honestly the movie had been the punchline of a number of jokes in the years following its release, it has turned into some kind of a cult favorite since then. Legend will play on May 13, 14, and 15 at the Palace Theatre.

And tomorrow night, Saturday, May 7, the Tallgrass Film Association and Music Theatre Wichita are teaming up for a sing-a-long screening of the musical Oklahoma!, complete with a pie auction in addition to the screening. That’ll all happen tomorrow at the Crown Uptown Theatre starting at 2:00.
