A Wichita health center that provides medical services in a predominantly underserved part of the city has been awarded funds to complete a $10.7 million expansion and renovation of its existing facility.

HealthCore Clinic was founded with a goal to eliminate disparities in health care. With funds from the Primary Care Development Corporation and Capital One Bank, officials estimate the clinic will be able to accommodate more than 30,000 additional patient visits over the next 7 years, effectively tripling the health center’s capacity.

"This new, state-of-the-art facility serves our community in a variety of important ways," Wichita Vice Mayor Lavonta Williams said in a release. "This building will help infuse this area with new development and job opportunities, which is proved to lower blight and crime rates. It will also help the population it serves have easier access to health care and wellness education, which can help improve the quality of life of countless individuals."

The new 40,000-square-foot facility will include exam rooms, a mental health room, a dental clinic, a pharmacy, and a research area for both the KU Medical School’s local campus as well as for Wichita State University. The plan is to create a new health complex that will serve as a viable solution to integrate medical services and community programs.

According to a release, typical patients at HealthCore are individuals living below 100 percent of the federal poverty level, close to half of whom are not insured. HealthCore offers programs to address challenges within the community including reducing Wichita’s high infant mortality rate and providing care to the more than 1,000 refugees living in the area.

The HealthCore Clinic is located at 2707 East 21st Street.
