A “No Tyson Sedgwick County” group is holding its first meeting this weekend to discuss opposition to a $320 million Tyson Foods poultry complex.
Organizer Lori Lawrence says she has concerns over the company's environmental and employment violations.
Lawrence says Saturday’s meeting will be a chance for residents to hear about the impacts the new facility could have in the area.
“If they are a fan of Tyson, come and talk to us," Lawrence says. "Let us know their perspective as well, we want both sides there, we want to speak with everyone who has an interest in this.”
The Greater Wichita Partnership is working on Sedgwick County’s proposal to Tyson. It’s estimated the project will bring about 1600 jobs to the community where it’s located.
Leavenworth County commissioners withdrew support for the project amid objection from residents. Tyson is also considering Cloud and Montgomery counties as potential sites.
The No Tyson Sedgwick County meeting is at 9 a.m. Saturday at Wichita's Linwood Park Recreation Center.
