The Wichita City Council has taken no action on efforts by abortion foes to use zoning laws to drive out a clinic that performs abortions.
Representatives from four groups asked the council on Tuesday to rezone the property of the South Wind Women's Center to prohibit abortions. A similar effort earlier this year to rezone it was rejected by the city planning commission.
Wichita-based nonprofit Trust Women Foundation Inc. opened a clinic earlier this year in the building that had been owned by Dr. George Tiller. The property had been used for medical purposes since 1937 and was zoned to allow a medical office when the abortion rights group bought it.
The latest anti-abortion move is spearheaded by Kansans for Life, Operation Rescue, Word of Life Church and the Kansas Coalition for Life.
