Tiffinie Irving Starts As Wichita Public Schools' Deputy Superintendent

Tiffinie Irving, Wichita Public Schools' first deputy superintendent in more than a decade, starts her new position on Tuesday.

Superintendent Alicia Thompson sent a message to Wichita Public Schools' staff saying the deputy superintendent position was needed to address concerns.

"You rightfully have noted that there are many great initiatives and inspired leaders, but you expressed concern that we lack focus and a cohesive and effective academic strategy," Thompson said, referring to comments she heard during her recent public listening sessions. "Dr. Irving’s work will allow us to address these concerns head-on, and I will be excited to have her in this leadership role."

Irving says she sees her role as establishing the focus that’s been missing.

“Currently we have those different departments, everyone working really, really hard, but not necessarily all focused in the same direction according to what we are needing to do to get the results we are needing," Irving said.

Irving was one of four assistant superintendents for the school district before she took the new position. She also has worked in the district as a principal and teacher.
