In the 1990s, the near future looked like a place where distance would no longer matter.

In an increasingly online economy, location would matter less than connection. The internet appeared destined to make working from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, much the same as tackling a job from Pittsburg, Kansas.

Yet three decades later, location matters as much as ever.

Tuition at public universities in Kansas is going up. School officials blame the increase on rising costs and years of dwindling state funding alongside flat enrollment.

The hikes all fall below the 3.1 percent average increase for state universities across the nation last year. Still, most Kansas public universities received increases above the nation’s inflation rate of about 2 percent.

Pittsburg State University is cutting 19 jobs.

The number of full-time employees at the university has dropped by more 7 percent when combined with other cuts over the last 18 months. The university is blaming the layoffs on a lack of state funding, rising costs and dropping enrollment.

“We’ve joined with the Kansas Board of Regents in actively advocating for additional state funding for many years,” Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott said in a news release. “Those efforts have clearly, and sadly, not resonated with the legislative leadership."
