Attorneys defending three Kansas men accused of a bomb plot in Garden City are arguing there wouldn’t have been a plot without FBI manipulation.

Wichita’s police chief says the department had “significant involvement” in a federal investigation that has brought charges against six people, including three former law enforcement officers. An affidavit says FBI investigators have been looking into an illegal gambling business with ties to public corruption in Wichita since November 2011.

Federal prosecutors are accusing two former Wichita police officers and a gambling operator of obstructing justice, saying they revealed the identity of an undercover officer who was investigating illegal gambling, an indictment unsealed Thursday says.

The indictment charges police officers Michael Zajkowski, 50, of Wichita and Bruce Mackey, 45, of Goddard with obstruction of law enforcement along with gambling operator Brock Wedman, 48, of St. Marys. Wedman also is charged with lying to the FBI.


Six children were recovered, and one suspect was arrested in Kansas during a nationwide sex trafficking sting that took place earlier this month.

New crime statistics from the FBI show that while crime dropped across the board in Kansas, numbers are up in Wichita.

Wichita saw an increase in both violent and property crimes in 2016, but only slightly.

FBI Involved In Multi-Year Investigation In Wichita Area

The FBI is involved in a multi-year investigation in the Wichita area.

Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell confirmed the investigation has been going on for at least two years.

"It could be longer, but that's certainly a conservative time frame," Longwell said.

Longwell said he could not comment on how or when he found out about the investigation because it is ongoing.

The FBI would not confirm or deny the investigation, but spokeswoman Bridget Patton said that agents were in Wichita last week.

New details have been released in the case involving three southwest Kansas men accused of plotting to attack Somali immigrants in Garden City. As KMUWs Nadya Faulx reports, two of the men are set to appear in court Friday for detention hearings.

Federal prosecutors filed a motion to keep Curtis Allen, Gavin Wright and Patrick Stein in custody during their trials.

The three men are charged with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction. They allegedly wanted to use a homemade explosive device to bomb an apartment complex where many Somali Muslims live and pray.
