SPECIAL: Global Village marks World Lion Day, an event to support conservation and other efforts to help the world’s dwindling wild lion population. We’ve got lion songs from around the world from the likes of reggae greats Burning Spear and Bob Marley & the Wailers, taiko drum group KODO, South African artists Miriam Makeba, Mahlathini - the ‘Lion of Soweto’ - with the Mahotella Queens, and the ‘30s Solomon Linda song that became an international hit as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

SPECIAL: As proclaimed by the UN in 2023, today is World Steelpan Day, and Global Village celebrates with a program devoted to music played on that distinctive national instrument of Trinidad. We’ll delve into the acclaimed Delos Caribbean Carnival series for music from classic pan groups like the Amoco Renegades, Samaroo Jets and more. We’ll also explore music from pan player Andy Narell, the Trinidad Steel Band that backed Harry Belafonte, and the London All Stars Steel Orchestra.

SPECIAL: It’s world jazz fusion this time in the Global Village, with guitarists Al DiMeola (with his World Sinfonia project), Brazil’s Diego Figueiredo and Indian slide player Debashish Bhattacharya; the ‘Father of Ethiojazz’ Mulatu Astatke; West Coast Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader; and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (from his Africa-inspired Tcholoka album).

Global Village celebrates Tunisian National Women’s Day with music from Tunisian singers Emel and Amina. And as part of the August Steelpan Month Feature we highlight some pan music from Trinidad featuring and celebrating of women. We’ll also hear selections from Iranian-Canadian singer Parisa Karimi Molan, calypsonian Calypso Rose, the Malian-Finnish women’s group Sinimuso, and the female world chamber folk group, the Medusa Quartet.

SPECIAL: Global Village celebrates the birthday of English folk singer Maddy Prior with music she did with Steeleye Span and the Carnival Band, as a solo artist, as a guest with Richard & Linda Thompson, and as part of the Silly Sisters with June Tabor.
