Next Best Thing is a new, limited-run commentary from KMUW. Every other Wednesday, KMUW's Jordan Kirtley will take a look at ways we can stay connected from a far via virtual events and outdoor activities.

Next Best Thing: Outdoor Smorgasbord

Now that we've made it through the dog days of summer, I can once again wholeheartedly endorse outdoor activities. Here are some options that allow for social distancing:

The Wichita Art Museum has two outdoor events this Saturday, September 19. First is an hour-long yoga flow with Limitless Yoga at 9:00 a.m., weather permitting. Then at 10:30 a.m. a WAM docent will lead a sculpture tour of the art garden. To keep everyone safely spread out, spots are limited for both activities. Check wichitaartmuseum.org for more info.

Speaking of outdoor sculptures, a bronze rendering of our beloved mascot WuShock was just unveiled on the WSU campus. The 8-foot sculpture was crafted by artist Connie Ernatt, and can be found at the entry of the WSU YMCA, welcoming or intimidating guests depending on their affiliations.

Ballet Wichita has two remaining performances of Sleeping Beauty as part of Ballet in the Park: this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at WSU's Duerksen Amphitheater, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Maize City Park. More info is at balletwichita.com.

Scary Movie Mondays started this week at the Starlite Drive-In, with horror classics presented by Wichita Big Screen every Monday through October 19. Showtimes are at starlitefun.com.

If, like me, you're not a horror movie fan but still want to celebrate spooky season, there's a screening of Hocus Pocus at Naftzger Park on October 23. You can also catch Jurassic Park there this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Check out the Naftzger Park Facebook page for more information and events.

Jordan Kirtley is KMUW's Marketing Manager and the host of Next Up, a local events commentary. More casually she is known as KMUW’s “in-house artist,” having designed the many facets of KMUW’s visual identity.
