Mayor Carl Brewer Proclaims Karla Burns Week

Broadway star and Wichita native Karla Burns received a proclamation Tuesday during a Wichita City Council meeting.  Mayor Carl Brewer declared December the 17 through the 24 as Karla Burns Week.

Burns is a 1978 graduate of Wichita State University.

She is known for her powerful mezzo-soprano voice which won her an Olivier Award in London and a Tony nomination for her portrayal  of "Queenie" in the revival of Show Boat on Broadway. 

Burns traveled extensively in Europe, performing in Paris, Madrid, and Cairo as well as across the U.S. She's received standing ovations and rave reviews for her performances.

She was awarded the Kansas Governor’s Arts Award in 1991 and she received a Special Recognition Award from The Arts Council in 2012  for outstanding achievement and development in the arts.

Mayor Brewer called Burns a treasure of Wichita.

Carla Eckels is Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW. She produces and hosts the R&B and gospel show Soulsations and brings stories of race and culture to The Range with the monthly segment In the Mix. Carla was inducted into The Kansas African American Museum's Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2020 for her work in broadcast/journalism.
