In-Studio: A Conversation with Skinny Hightower

In this special edition of Soulsations, host/producer Carla Eckels speaks with Skinny Hightower — chart-topping jazz musician from Wichita, KS — about his craft and his latest two-disc collection BLUE MOON. We'll also hear a new song by Bebe Merrills, produced by Hightower.

From Wichita, Kansas, Hightower is a record producer, bass player, drummer and jazz pianist with a reputation for trekking his own path. With two #1 Billboard singles (Blue Moon, Taboo) and four Top 5 Billboard singles (Blue Moon, Taboo, Bittersweet and Sample That), Hightower is no stranger to mass appeal. And having performed at various jazz festivals, he has established himself as a top tier artist.

KMUW's Carla Eckels will host Hightower in conversation about his craft and his latest effort Blue Moon, a two-disc collection of lively yet edgy '70s-clad instrumentals. Over 100 songs were recorded, all produced by Hightower, and a team was carefully selected to determine the best 24 songs of the bunch, forming what is now an album of considerable proportions.

Soulsations with Carla Eckels takes listeners on an engaging musical journey of R&B and gospel music. The program airs at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. every Sunday on KMUW — the flagship station in Wichita — and at various times on other public radio stations.

Carla Eckels is Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW. She produces and hosts the R&B and gospel show Soulsations and brings stories of race and culture to The Range with the monthly segment In the Mix. Carla was inducted into The Kansas African American Museum's Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2020 for her work in broadcast/journalism.
