Monday, November 23

Night Train highlights music from singer Gloria Lynne, trumpeter Melton Mustafa, bassist Ray Drummond, and songwriter Johnny Mandel (including a special in hour two of the show), all born on this date. Plus covers of songs from November featured artist Mose Allison from singer Kitty Margolis and drummer (and former Allison sideman) Jerry Granelli; and new releases from saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Latin jazz band Mongorama, trombonist John Fedchock with his NY Sextet, and the neo-trad New Orleans High Society band.

Tuesday, Novmeber 24

Tonight on the Night Train there’s music from November featured artist Mose Allison with an all-star New Orleans band and early in his career with the Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Quintet; new music from Bill Warfield & the Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestra (with a Booker T & the MGs cover – the group featured this month on Crossroads), saxophonist Javon Jackson, drummer and film producer Richard Baratta, and the Flying Horse Big Band (with at tribute to Ray Charles); and on tonight’s birthday list, organist Brian Charette (on a new album from Doug Webb – the saxophone ‘voice’ for Lisa Simpson), pianist Teddy Wilson (with Billie Holiday), and pianist and organist Wild Bill Davis (with Louis Jordan and in a special in hour two of the show).

Wednesday, November 25

Night Train marks the birthday of one of the under-rated treasures of vocal jazz, Etta Jones, with music from her last studio album and a Jazz Profiles special in hour two that chronicles her life and work. Night Train also marks birthdays of legendary saxophonist Paul Desmond (we’ll hear lots more from him in December when Night Train marks the centennial birthday of Dave Brubeck), singer Holly Cole (with a cover of a Mose Allison song), trumpeter Terell Stafford (from an album he did in tribute to hard bop master Lee Morgan), soul jazz saxophonist Rusty Bryant, cornetist Nat Adderley, and pianist Dick Wellstood.

Thursday, November 26

Night Train celebrates Thanksgiving with a musical menu filled with goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts –served up by such tasty players as Bob Dorough, Jaco Pastorius, Gene Ammons, Cyrus Chestnut, Matt Wilson, Don Cherry, and Karrin Allyson.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
