'Higher!' With Wichita's Own Rudy Love

Carla Eckels
/
KMUW
Rudy Love talks with Carla Eckels in the KMUW studios.

Sunday, October 25

Listen closely to the 2013 box set of Sly and The Family Stone's Higher! and you'll hear Wichita's own Rudy Love on the majority of the cuts. Rudy says that Sly congratulated him on his nerve to have attitude: "He liked that about me so then he let me do quite a few more vocals." Rudy's "funkumentary" This Is Love is out now on DVD.

Also on this episode of Soulsations, we'll hear the sounds of Prince, a classic from the Spinners, and brand new gospel music from the fabulous Clark Sisters. Plus, this week's DoubleTake suggestion comes from a Soulsations listener in Oklahoma City. A longtime Luther Vandross fan, Jan chose the signature tune "A House Is Not A Home" from his 1981 debut album Never Too Much. We'll also hear a version by Ruben Studdard (of American Idol fame) from his 2018 tribute album Ruben Sings Luther.

Carla Eckels is Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW. She produces and hosts the R&B and gospel show Soulsations and brings stories of race and culture to The Range with the monthly segment In the Mix. Carla was inducted into The Kansas African American Museum's Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2020 for her work in broadcast/journalism.
