Carmen McRae’s Centennial, Remembering Andy Gonzalez, Mingus And Diva

Monday, April 20

Throughout this week, Night Train pays tribute to Latin jazz bassist Andy Gonzalez, starting tonight with work he did with Tito Puente’s Golden Latin Jazz All Stars. Plus more from Carmen McRae, featured this month for her centennial birthday, and birthday salutes tonight for guitarist Issi Rozen, flutist Holly Hofmann, bassist Avashai Cohen, and vibes legend Lionel Hampton (including a special featuring him, Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway in hour two of the show).

Tuesday, April 21

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Mundell Lowe (with April featured artist Carmen McRae) and trombonist Slide Hampton (with the Heath Brothers, trombonist Melba Liston – but this time on tuba, and as a special guest with the Bill Charlap Trio in a Savannah Music Festival concert special in hour two of the show). Also in store – new music from Carla Bley and Lafayette Harris, Jr. and tributes to pianist Mike Longo and bassist Andy Gonazlez.
