Birthdays Of Branford, Rez, Bird & More
Night Train marks birthdays of bluesy Basie band singer Jimmy Rushing and saxophonist Branford Marsalis (featured on his latest album, and with Bobby Hutcherson, Shirley Horn, and the Marsalis Family). Also more music from August featured artist Pat Martino (as a leader and guesting with Willis Jackson and Jimmy Heath) and new releases from Al Foster, the Eyal Vilner Big Band, Vanessa Rubin, and the Alan Broadbent Trio.
Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Rez Abbasi, tenor great Lester Young, and harpist, pianist and composer Alice Coltrane. The August Pat Martino feature continues with music he did as a leader and as a guest, along with some music written in tribute to him. And we’ll hear new music from the Wayne Wallace latin Jazz Quintet, Greg Abate & the Tim Ray Trio, and a previously unreleased live set from Stan Getz.
Birthday artists tonight include organist Larry Goldings (as a leader and with John Scofield), guitarist Nate Najar, trumpeter (and Pat’s brother) Mike Metheny, and singer Cecile McLorin Salvant (including a concert performance from the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show). Plus a final round with August featured artist Pat Martino from his late ‘60s set East! and with Joey DeFrancesco and Joe Pesci, and the debut release from saxophonist Paul Nedzela.
One of the true giants of jazz, Charlie Parker, was born on this date. In honor of the occasion, Night Train steps aside for a two part Jazz Profiles special about the alto master and bebop pioneer. Hour one explores his formative years and arrival in New York City. The second hour follows Bird’s career from the mid-40s on, as he emerged as one of the leading bebop innovators, along with Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk.
