Cool Jazz Month, Canada Day, Jazz Birthdays And 4th Of July Celebrations

Monday, July 1

SPECIAL: It’s Canada Day and Night Train celebrates with a program devoted to Canadian jazz artists, legendary and contemporary. Among the artists featured are Oscar Peterson, Diana Krall, Holly Cole, Jane Bunnett, Molly Johnson, the all-Canadian Rob McConnell Jive 5, Carol Welsman, Cory Weeds, Renee Rosnes, Newfoundland transplant Florian Hoefner and more – plus some jazz versions of songs from Joni Mitchell.

Global Village features world music artists from Canada tonight in celebration of Canada Day.

Tuesday, July 2

Night Train marks birthdays of piano great Ahmad Jamal (including a piano trios special in hour two featuring him) and saxophonist Tim Warfield (as a leader and with the Terell Stafford Quintet).  Plus one of the classic tracks from Birth of the Cool to kick off the July featuring marking the 70th anniversary of the first of those groundbreaking recording sessions – and new music from trombonist Steve Davis and keyboardist Charlie Dennard.

Wednesday, July 3

Night Train celebrates birthdays of organists Dr. Lonnie Smith (including a special featuring him in hour two) and Rhoda Scott, and singers Melissa Walker and Johnny Hartman tonight. Plus new music from former K.C. drummer Matt Kane and singer Dwight Trible, and for the July Birth of the Cool feature, we’ll hear music from one of the key figures from those original sessions, baritone saxophonist and composer Gerry Mulligan.

Thursday, July 4

SPECIAL: Night Train steps aside for a 4th of July Holiday concert special featuring some great American sounds from the Gulf Coast. Among the highlights are two NEA Heritage fellows, Crescent City clarinet trad master Dr. Michael White leading the seven-piece Original Liberty Jazz Band, and fiddle great Michael Doucet with BeauSoleil performing some classic Cajun tunes. Also on the bill, New Orleans-based Mississippi bluesman Little Freddie King, and the Electrifying Crown Seekers gospel group.
