Birthday Bonanza – Soukous Star Rochereau, Zydeco Great Buckwheat Zydeco And More

Monday, November 13

Global Village pays tribute to Tabu Ley Rochereau - one of the giants of African music and one of the architects of the popular soukous style of music – on what would have been his 77th birthday. We’ll highlight music from early in his career when he worked with Le Grande Kalle, some of his classic recordings, and several key artists who emerged from his influential bands.

Tuesday, November 14

Global Village marks birthdays of zydeco star Buckwheat Zydeco and South African guitarist Derek Gripper, and features new music from the contemporary Gullah group Ranky Tanky, the eclectic Breton band ‘ndiaz, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, and world-rock group The Vampires with guitarist Lionel Loueke.

Wednesday, November 15

Global Village continues the November New European Folk feature with the latest from Spanish guitarist Raul Rodriguez, the Mediterranean music of Adel Salameh & Eduardo Niebla, and the eclectic Afro Celt Sound System. It’s also the birthday of singer, cuatro player and songwriter Marta Topferova, a native of the Czech Republic whose music has been inspired by the sounds and styles of Latin America. Plus new music from Quadro Nuevo and Musique Noire.

Global Village features some Indian fusion in this visit – focusing on artists from India and from around the world who combine Indian music with rock, jazz and other styles of music. Among the artists featured are Bollywood legend R.D. Burman, Kronos Quartet from their album of music from R.D. Burman, electric Carnatic guitarist Prasanna, Indi-pop pioneer Sheila Chandra with Monsoon, Anoushka Shankar with Karsh Kale, and Canadian artists Sultans of String and Kiran Ahluwahlia.

Friday, November 17

Global Village celebrates birthdays of three jazz artists who have incorporated world influences in the music – adventurous trombonist Roswell Rudd, pioneering French horn player and world jazz artist David Amram, and bassist Ben Allison. And there’s new music from Mali’s Makan Badje Tounkara, contemporary reggae group New Kingston, and Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem.
