Night Train celebrates the birthdays of two great jazz pianists tonight – Chick Corea and Geri Allen. We’ll hear music from Chick’s new album recorded a few years back at his 70th birthday shows, along with music he did with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Gary Burton and Bela Fleck. Geri Allen appears as a leader and along with Betty Carter, Marian McPartland and Charles Lloyd. Plus new music from pianist Ahmad Jamal, singer Mark Winkler, guitarist Kevin Eubanks and saxophonist Richie Cole.

Tuesday 6.13.17

Night Train highlights some singers this time, including more music from Dave Lambert (with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross) for his centennial birthday and vocalese hitmaker King Pleasure; Monk competition winner and rising star Jazzmeia Horn; Virginia Schenck (with a tribute to another legendary vocalist, Abbey Lincoln); and new albums from Diana Krall, Ben Sidran, and Bob Dorough. Also featured tonight - new music from Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla, organist Akiko Tsuruga, and KC saxophonist Bobby Watson, and classics from Herbie Mann, Freddie Hubbard and Duke Pearson.

Wednesday 6.14.17

Tonight on the Night Train, it’s divas! Sarah, Carmen, Ella, Dinah, a tribute to Billie Holiday and more. Plus soul jazz from Hank Crawford, one of Phil Woods’ final concert appearances, and classics from Wes Montgomery, Benny Golson and Ben Webster.

Thursday 6.15.17

Night Train marks the birthday of Erroll Garner with music from several of his classic albums (including Concert by the Sea) and the recent Ready Take One set of previously unreleased material. It’s also the birthday of composer Edvard Grieg and Night Train will explore some pieces from Duke Ellington’s Peer Gynt Suite based on his music. Plus more from Lambert, Hendricks & Ross for the June Dave Lambert Centennial Birthday feature and new music from the new jazz supergroup Hudson (DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski & Scofield), Heads of State and Billy Childs.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
