Highway Queens, Broken Hearts And Pleasant Dreams

After releasing a string of widely-acclaimed albums in the 1990s, Sam Phillips was tapped to provide the score to the popular television series Gilmore Girls for the show’s entire run. She has continued to write, record and release other music and in 2017 will issue a new full-length album. In the meantime, fans can hear some new and favorite selections from her via the Human Contact is Never Easy EP. Listen for music from that recording on this episode as well as selections from the Starlite Campbell Band’s Blueberry Pie.

Highway Queen is the latest release by singer-songwriter Nikki Lane. Though touching on elements of Americana and roots music, the record also appeals to a range of musical sensibilities, including parts drawn from the music of Lana Del Ray, the Black Keys and others. Intoxicated Women is the latest in a series of recordings from Australian musician Mick Harvey which bring the songs of French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg into English. Harvey’s latest efforts focuses on a number of duets and features appearances from a number of female performers from around the globe. We’ll hear selections from Intoxicated Women on this episode of the show as well as new music from Kansas band Vehicles and the new album Echo.

Listen for selections from Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins, the latest from San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet as well as music from Split Lip Rayfield’s third LP, Never Make It Home.

Tuesday, February 14

It’s our annual Valentine’s Day special with selections from Billy Bragg, ELO, Jackson Browne, Jeff Beck and Bash & Pop.

Wednesday, February 15

Released in 1980 Sandinista! was not only the fourth release from The Clash but, arguably, the group’s most ambitious. The record draws on a diverse range of influences including reggae, rockabilly, disco and folk. We’ll hear selections from this release as well as music from Pleasant Dreams, the 1981 record from the Ramones.

Thursday, February 16

Listen for selections from Bob Dylan’s 1997 release Time Out of Mind as well as music from Slim Dunlap’s 1993 effort The Old New Me.
