Monday @ The Movies/'Disney World,' Bossa Pioneer Roberto Menescal, World Jazz & Chocolate Day

It’s another Monday at the Movies in the Global Village – this time with a visit to ‘Disney World’ for world, jazz and other unusual versions of songs from Disney films like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp and other classics – done by Los Lobos, Miles Davis, Buster Poindexter, Peggy Lee and more.

Tuesday, October 25

Global Village marks the birthday of Brazilian guitarist, composer, and bossa nova pioneer Roberto Menescal with music he did with his son’s band, Bossacucanova, along with covers of some of his classics songs from Eliane Elias and the L.A. 4. Plus more music from and inspired by Cuba for the October feature – this time from contemporary son group Asere and violinist Gregor Huebner. We also remember fiddle Angus Grant of the Scottish group Shooglenifty who passed away last week, and feature Tejano great Lydia Mendoza’s classic song, “Mal Hombre.”

Wednesday, October 26

This time in the Global Village for the October Cuba feature, it’s Africa-Latin, the meeting of African and Afro-Cuban music and musicians including music from the new East Africa compilation Urgent Jumping, Cameroon’s Richard Bona in his first project with an Afro-Cuban band, Angolan artist Ricardo Lemvo and his Latin group Makina Loca, Congolese Rumba and Soukous stars Wendo Kolosoy, Kanda Bongo Man and Kekele, Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab, and the meeting of African and Latin musicians in the group Africando.

Global Village highlights world jazz including music from free-jazz legend Ornette Coleman with tabla great Badal Roy, African jazz from vocalist Gino Sitson, Brazilian jazz from clarinetist Anat Cohen, the Latin Side of Peanuts pianist Vince Guaraldi, pioneering world chamber jazz ensemble Oregon, and South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim.

Friday, October 28

Global Village celebrates National Chocolate Day with some “Chocolate Ice Cream,” Hot Chocolate and Cocoa Tea. Plus birthday salutes to South Africa’s Busi Mhlongo, Cameroon’s Richard Bona, Afro-Cuban jazz pioneer Chico O’Farrill, and bassist Glen Moore of the innovative world chamber jazz ensemble, Oregon – and new music from Brian Marsella’s Imaginarium, the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, and the Frightnrs.
