Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Richie Beirach, trumpeter Randy Sandke, and clarinetists Ken Peplowski and Artie Shaw (including an Artie Shaw Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show). Plus more music from May featured artist Carla Bley (from her albums Heavy Heart and Looking for America) and new music from Three More Sounds’ tribute to McCoy Tyner and Gene Harris, and June Bisantz’s tribute to Chet Baker.
Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 75th birthday with jazz covers of his songs. It’s also the birthday of 2016 NEA Jazz Master Archie Shepp and soul jazz organ master Charles Earland. And there’s music from May featured artist Carla Bley and new releases from Kevin Mahogany and Charles Lloyd.

Tonight the show features a number of her fellow Jazz Masters – including one of the first NEA honorees - Dizzy Gillespie, along with Abbey Lincoln, Billy Higgins, Roy Haynes, Keith Jarrett, Mose Allison, Art Blakey, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Charles Lloyd and more.
Night Train celebrates birthdays of singers Peggy Lee and Denise Donatelli, and of the legendary Miles Davis – including music from the soundtrack to the new Miles Ahead film and a special in hour two about the making of that film and the music of Miles. Plus new music from the Clayton Brothers and the FlorianHoefner Group, and more from May featured artist Carla Bley.
