New Music, Classic Recordings, Birthday Salutes To Jimmy Smith, Donald Byrd & More

Monday 12.7.15

Night Train heads to the west coast for some classic and contemporary sounds from that part of the country. Among the artists featured – Charles Brown, Art Pepper, the L.A. Treasures Project, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton and Chet Baker.

Tuesday 12.8.15

Night Train celebrates the birthdays of saxophonist Tim Armacost, bassist Nathan East, and jazz organ pioneer Jimmy Smith (including a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show). Plus new music from the critically acclaimed new group of young jazz players, Cowboys and Frenchmen.

Wednesday 12.9.15

Night Train marks birthdays of trumpeter and composer Donald Byrd, NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens and contemporary Latin jazz artist Emilio Teubal, - plus new releases from Jazz at Lincoln Center (recording during an historic appearance in Cuba), the Chester Thompson Trio, and the trombone-heavy Band of Bones.

Thursday 12.10.15

Night Train highlights jazz legends and classic recordings tonight – including music from Ella Fitzgerald, Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans, John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and Erroll Garner’s Concert by the Sea. Plus new music from keyboardist Michael Kocour, John Ellis & Double Wide, Terell Stafford, Gilad Hekselman, and Ron Carter with the WDR Big Band.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
