Monday, September 7
Global Village celebrates Labor Day with songs about work and working, the people who do it and the joys and pains of it. Among the artists featured: the Strawbs, Toots Hibbert, Van Morrison, Sting, Abbey Lincoln, the Beatles, Jimmy Reed, the Roches and more.
Tuesday, September 8
“Legends” this time in the Global Village, with music from some great figures in music from around the world, including South Africa’s Miriam Makeba, the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, African hitmaker Manu Dibango, and flamenco guitar legend Paco de Lucia. Plus more from September featured artists and one of the longest running groups in reggae, Third World, with their hit song with Stevie Wonder, “Try Jah Love” - and new music from Musette Explosion, Mbongwana Star, and Vinicius Cantuaria.
Wednesday, September 9
Global Village highlights ‘60s Latin funk band Mandrill, American Afrobeat group Antibalas, ‘60s Spanish ska band Los Telstars, and acclaimed oudist and National Heritage fellow Simon Shaheen.
Thursday, September 10
Global Village marks the birthday of world fusion and neo-soul vibes player Roy Ayers, Incan princess and exotica favorite Yma Sumac, and musical adventurer Raymond Scott. Plus more music from Third World for the September feature, and new music from the Brown Rice Family, and the Gangbe Brass Band.
Friday, September 11
Global Village highlights music from English folk great John Martyn, bassist Victor Wooten (of the Flecktones) and guitarist Leo Kottke for their birthdays. Plus more music from September featured artists Third World – this time the title track of their critically acclaimed third album, Journey to Addis, and new music from Bolo, Kuku, and the contemporary Afro-Brazilian compilation, Amplificador.
