Night Train highlights several major new jazz vocal albums tonight – from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Carter Calvert and Giacomo Gates. Plus more jazz flutes – this time from key jazz flute players Charles Lloyd, Frank Wess, Hubert Laws, and Yusef Lateef - and birthday salutes to Wynonnie Harris (his 100th birthday today –also featured throughout August on Crossroads), guitarist Mimi Fox, and saxophonist Ron Holloway.

Night Train marks the birthdays of composer Leonard Bernstein with some jazz versions of his compositions; of guitarist Pat Martino with a cover of a Wayne Shorter composition; and of Wayne Shorter with music under his own name, with Weather Report and in a special in hour two of the show celebrating his contributions as a composer. Plus Charenee Wade’s new tribute to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, and an influential track from flutist Herbie Mann, as the August Jazz Flute Feature continues.

Night Train highlights music and musicians from around the world – including Brazil’s Antonio Adolfo (from his new album Tema) and Nilson Matta, Argentina’s Diego Urcola, Cameroon’s Gino Sitson, the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, and a new album from tenor saxophonist Juli Wood that explores music from Finland. Plus more flutes for the August feature – from Charles Lloyd, Eric Dolphy, Anne Drummond, Joe Farrell, T.K. Blue, and David ‘Fathead’ Newman.
