Bill Goffrier: Wichita Punk Godfather

Steve Latham

Bill Goffrier helped launch a new wave of independent Wichita music in 1979 with his band The Embarrassment. Despite coming from the Midwest at in the pre-Internet era the band managed to earn airplay in Boston and turn the ears of the members of R.E.M.

The band broke up in 1983 but has reunited several times across the decades while Goffrier has gone on to play with Big Dipper and, more recently, with his wife Karlee. Here’s Goffrier performing on The Embarrassment’s seminal single “Sex Drive.”

The guitar in its many forms and styles is featured throughout June across our music programs. For more information about the shows and their features and to listen to KMUW music shows anytime online, visit our website at kmuw.org.
