World Jazz For Jazz Appreciation Month, Plus Several World Music Star Birthdays

Monday, April 6

Throughout April Global Village celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with a wide array of world jazz artists and sounds, including a birthday salute this time to one of the pioneers of African jazz, Randy Weston. Plus new music from Cambodian rock band, Dengue Fever, the Afrosound of Colombia Vol. 2 compilation, and Indian drum and brass band Red Baraat.   

Night Train will also feature music from Randy Weston tonight.

Tuesday, April 7

Global Village marks birthdays of Latin jazz & soul percussion great Mongo Santamaria, pioneering Nigerian drummer Olatunji, and sitar legend Ravi Shankar. Today also marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Billie Holiday and Global Village celebrates with a Brazilian-tinged version of one of her classics from a new tribute album by Canadian singer Molly Johnson.

Night Train is featuring Billie Holiday throughout April to mark her centennial birthday.

Wednesday, April 8

Global Village celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with a wide array of world-jazz artists and recordings – including music this time from the gypsy brass meets gypsy jazz guitar project from Adrian Raso & Fanfare Ciocarlia, Rabih Abou-Khalil’s unique blend of Middle Eastern music and jazz, some avant second line sounds from the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and more.

Thursday, April 9

Global Village highlights some ‘world music stars’ this time around – performers who have achieved wider popular success. Among the artists featured are world music pioneers Bob Marley (with a cover of one of his songs from the new Rebel Tumbao album) and Ravi Shankar, the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, Afrobeat legend Fela, new tango creator Astor Piazzolla (performed by Trio Voronezh), and the award-winning Angelique Kidjo (from a new album that features her with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg).

Friday, April 10

Global Village celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with a variety of world jazz artists and sounds throughout April, including music this time from the Afro-Caribbean jazz inspired group Bones and Tones and South African jazz great Hugh Masekela. Plus birthday salutes to contemporary Latin jazz innovator Omar Sosa, Bunny Wailer- one of the original members of the Wailers, and exotica star Martin Denny.
