Best Of 2014 & Good Birthday Vibes With Bobby Hutcherson And Bill Ware
Special: As part of the January Best of 2014 feature, Night Train has also been paying tribute to artists who passed away last year. Tonight’s show is a rebroadcast of the special tribute to Charlie Haden, which aired shortly after his passing last year. The program highlights music from throughout the great jazz bassist’s career, from his days as the two-year old yodeling Cowboy Charlie in his family’s band to his groundbreaking work with Ornette Coleman, his own groups – including Quartet West and the Liberation Music Orchestra - and collaborations with some of the greats of 20th century jazz, including Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Art Pepper, Hank Jones, Chet Baker, Abbey Lincoln, and Michael Brecker.
Night Train marks the birthdays of vibes great Bobby Hutcherson (including music from his 2014 Night Train favorite and Grammy-nominated release, Enjoy the View) and Mozart (with a jazz approach to his work). Also more of the Best of 2014 – this time with music from guitarist Fareed Haque, the Grammy-nominated album from Fred Hersch, and a remembrance of Jim Hall and Charlie Haden - plus new music from Tony Monaco, the Hot Sardines, the Dana Landry Trio, and a reissue from guitarist Martin Taylor.
Night Train marks the birthdays of vibes player Bill Ware, pianist Eldar, and guitarist Henry Johnson; highlights more of the Best of 2014; and features new music from pianist and composer Marc Seales, Gabriel Espinosa with Hendrik Meurkens, the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, and Houston Person.
Special: Night Train wraps up the January Best of 2014 feature with a special countdown of the show’s top twenty favorite jazz albums of the past year – plus one from Kansas City soul jazz organist Everette DeVan as the debut release of a new Wichita label. The full list of all the music show favorite releases and books can be found here.
