71 Years of George Harrison, 'Beatlejazz' Wraps Up

Monday 2.24.14

Night Train marks the birthday of acclaimed tenor sax and flute player David Fathead Newman, with music from throughout a career that started in the mid-'50s and continued for the next six decades. Along with music from releases under his own name, the show features work he did with Ray Charles, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Roy Hargrove. Plus more Beatle jazz, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (who have an area date later this week), and new music from Chick Corea, the Mack Avenue Superband, and Bob Dorough.

Tuesday 2.25.14

SPECIAL: Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday of Beatle George Harrison tonight. In hour one of the show, Night Train features jazz covers of classic Beatles and Harrison songs, and then in hour two it’s a special called Fab Four Jazz, focusing on ‘60s jazz covers of Beatles songs and the reaction of the jazz community to the arrival of "Beatlemania". Cultural historian Michael McGerr provides some insights and music is provided by Grant Green, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine and more.

Night Train has a little vibes extravaganza tonight, with music from vibes masters Lionel Hampton, Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson (with the Modern Jazz Quartet), along with the Organik Vibe Trio, the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, the group called Vibes, and Erik Charlston JazzBrasil.

Thursday 2.27.14

Tonight, Night Train wraps up its month-long Beatles feature with jazz covers from the Beatlejazz project, Rene Marie, Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny (who will be the March featured artist on Night Train). Plus, a birthday salute to tenor sax legend Dexter Gordon, and new music from Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla, guitarist Tom Dempsey, and tenor saxophonist Anton Schwartz.
