Gov. Brownback Outlines New Education Budget Proposals

Gov. Sam Brownback's new budget proposals would phase in a $76 million increase in aid to public schools over two years.  He would would also use $77 million in revenue from state-owned casinos to help fund teacher pensions.

The governor  outlined two-years worth of state spending recommendations today.

He proposed that the state keep its base aid for public schools at $3,838 per pupil for the fiscal year that begins July 1st.  Then, he'd increase it by $14  per pupil starting in July of 2014.

Both figures are still far short of the $4,492 per pupil ordered by a three-judge panel hearing an education funding lawsuit in Shawnee County.
