UPDATE: Kansas Supreme Court Finds Current School Funding Levels Unconstitutional

Update: The Kansas Supreme Court said Friday the state's current public school funding levels are unconstitutional.

In the much-anticipated ruling, the court said Kansas' poor school districts were harmed when the state made the decision to cut certain payments when tax revenues declined during the Great Recession.

The Kansas Supreme Court will hand down a decision Friday in a lawsuit over school funding.

School districts and parents say Kansas is not living up to its constitutional responsibility to fund education.

They say the state has gone back on its promises to increase spending.

And Those promises followed a previous lawsuit over school funding.

If the court sides with the plaintiffs today, it could mean hundreds of millions of dollars for Kansas schools.

Lawyers for the state say it is up to legislators, not the courts, to decide how much to spend on schools.
