A corporal in the Sedgwick County Jail has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an inmate. According to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, the alleged incidents took place at the jail where the victim was in custody.
The corporal, who officials say is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office, is accused of having sexual contact with a female inmate on three occasions. The first incident came to light on March 25 and is reported to have happened in early January.
Easter said when the deputy declined to talk about the incident, he was booked into the county jail on two counts of unlawful sexual relations and one count of attempted unlawful sexual relations.
“The fact of the matter is that we can’t control all of the actions of our people, especially when it comes to criminal activity," Easter said. "They choose to do those acts.”
Easter said the case has not yet been forwarded to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office, but he expects it will be handled just like any other case. The name of the corporal has not been released.
