Wichita City Council member Lavonta Williams and Bike Walk Wichita will conduct a bike-giveaway on Monday evening.
The event will distribute more than 25 bikes and helmets to young people in Northeast Wichita to encourage more biking, walking and community unity in the area.
District 1 Councilwoman Lavonta Williams says it’s important to get more people in the neighborhood using the new bike and walk paths.
"I think it will promote healthy living, another way of lifestyle," Williams says. "I was just down at Open streets ICT and we saw many people on bikes, but very few people of color. It’s going to be very, very good for the community as a whole, but especially for those in that northeast community."
Participants can also watch a live bike art demonstration by a local artist who will custom paints bikes on site. Cyclists will join the group Black Girls Do Bike for a ride around the neighborhood after the event, weather permitting.
The event takes place on Monday, September 25 from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Wichita's Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center at 19th & Volutsia.
An additional bike giveaway will take place on Saturday, September 30 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Bike Walk Wichita at 131 S. Laura St.
