Vigil For Alton Sterling And Philando Castile To Be Held In Old Town Square

NPR.org
A sign is hung outside the Minnesota Governor's Residence as about 200 people gathered in St. Paul on Thursday, protesting the fatal shooting of Philando Castile by a suburban police officer.

Following a series of police shootings this week, a group of local community organizers will be holding a vigil on Thursday in Old Town Square.

The event is a response to the officer-involved shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. Both incidents were caught on camera.

According to a statement from organizers, the vigil will also serve as a rally to "demand action from elected officials and candidates running for office."

Speakers include Tye McEwen, Iz Real, A.J. Bohannon, Meko Haze, Mike Shatz, Funeral Director Robert Bethea and Wichita NAACP President, Larry Burks, Sr. A number of elected officials and candidates for public office, including state Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau and state Rep. Gail Finney, are scheduled to attend.

The event will take place on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Oldtown Warren Theater.
