A protest rally is scheduled for Monday evening in response to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. The Florida neighborhood watch volunteer was acquitted Saturday in the shooting death of unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin.
Organizers from the Kansas Justice Advocate want the Justice Department to step in and file charges against Zimmerman, claiming that he violated Martin’s civil rights. The rally is set to take place near 21st Street and Hillside in Wichita at 5 p.m.
Other cities across the country took to the streets Sunday with largely peaceful rallies. Some arrests were made in Los Angeles, where more than 100 police officers in riot gear converged on a crowd of about 80 protesters.
