Hundreds took part in an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Wichita Monday, co-sponsored by The Greater Wichita Ministerial League and Wichita State University.
This year’s event showcased a live broadcast of the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.
The audience erupted in applause while watching Obama take the ceremonial oath of office on a big screen at the WSU Metroplex.
Attendee Floyd Johnson, Sr. considered the day historic.
“I never thought I’d live to see a black man become President of the United States and it’s just a blessing for me to live to see this day,” Johnson said.
“We’ve come along way and we still have a long way to go.”
Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer was among the speakers who made remarks about the significant work of civil rights leader, Dr. King.
“We can’t let Dr. King’s dream die in our hands,” said Brewer.
Mayor Brewer was also the surprise recipient of the Greater Wichita Ministerial League President’s award presented to an individual whose life and contributions exemplify service to others.
