What's the controversial proposal to change Supreme Court Judges selections? Come to Feb. 24 meeting
WHO: League of Women Voters Wichita Metro with speaker Gloria Flentje, past chair of
the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Committee and past president of the
Wichita Bar Association
WHAT: Informational meeting on proposed Constitutional Amendment on Kansas
Supreme Court Selection
WHERE: Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2nd St.
WHEN: 6 pm, Tuesday, Feb. 24th
The League of Women Voters Wichita Metro features speaker Gloria Flentje at its Feb. 24 meeting, who will lead a discussion of a proposed controversial change to the Kansas constitution. The August 2026 ballot will include a proposed constitutional amendment that would change the way the Kansas Supreme Court justices are selected, from a merit-based selection process to partisan elections.
A “yes” vote would authorize the election of state Supreme Court justices and abolish the existing Supreme Court nominating commission. A “no” vote opposes amending the state constitution, which for decades has made the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Commission responsible for providing the names of nominees to the governor, who must then select a justice from that list.
This discussion is open to the public and the media is welcome. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in the government.
